WHAT WE DO

Our activities stem from our goals, which lead us to have three primary efforts - public demonstrations, election of officials who will further the common good, and various other activities that take advantage of our members’ areas of expertise as we work to influence North Carolina and Federal policy.

DEMONSTRATIONS

Our weekly demonstrations in Hillsborough, NC, from 11am-noon, provide a community structure and forum for expression of our increasing concerns and our intention to right the wrongs being done to individuals within our borders and to the foundations of our democracy. The demonstrations also provide a much needed infusion of hope to continue our efforts. We get to know one another’s talents and determination as we meet Saturday after Saturday, and we draw energy and encouragement from the increasingly large numbers of people attending. Our highly visible presence along Churton Street, on the grounds of the historic Old Orange County Courthouse, also allows the many passersby to join in resisting this administration’s illegal actions and destruction of bedrock American values.

In addition to our weekly demonstrations, we have organized two “No Kings” days, as well as “Good Trouble” and “Workers Over Billionaires” demonstrations in Hillsborough.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Speaker Series

Some of our past speakers:

  • Tom Jensen, of Public Policy Polling in Raleigh, offered his views on the upcoming elections, voter trends and some ‘get out the vote’ strategies.

  • Graig Meyer, then NC Senator, now Director of the North Carolina Justice Center

  • Jonah Garson, previous 1st Vice Chair of NC Democratic Party, now NC State Senator

  • Frank Bruni, Professor of Journalism, Duke University and opinion writer for NY Times.

  • David Graham, writer for The Atlantic and author of The Project: How Project 2025 is Reshaping America

  • David Zucchino, author of Pulitzer Prize winning book: Wilmington’s Lie

Our Speaker Series features local and nationally known guests who have helpful expertise, insights and information of interest to our members as we learn more about local and national political realities and options, historical contexts, elections, and the impact of various policies on North Carolina and our country more broadly. Our discussions encourage respectful consideration of ideas and open minds. They also help us zero in on how to use our talents and energy most effectively. We often collaborate with other community organizations in sponsoring our speakers. Our events are open to the public and free of charge.

Elections

Concerned Carolinians are involved in voter registration, poll watching, voter education, canvassing, phone calls, rallies, election security, postcard writing and other aspects of support for free and fair elections for all registered voters. Members are also involved in campaigns for our candidates of choice.

Policy Advising

Many of our members have expertise in areas such as taxation, crime prevention, immigration, public health, law, the environment, education, cultural studies, elections, economics, the state and national politics, and other areas of importance at this moment in time. Concerned Carolinians fosters individual and group efforts of our members to create useful networks and influence policy.

University Involvement

The attacks of the Trump administration on academic freedom, diversity, immigration, funding of vital research and other aspects of university life have hit hard in our immediate vicinity. Many of our members have ties to area universities and are involved in trying to preserve the autonomy and founding principles of these institutions.

Disseminating Facts

Getting accurate information to the public is of critical importance. Our members create and distribute fact sheets and postcards about current issues such as the environment, immunizations, the real cost of the Big Beautiful Bill. We also contribute articles and write letters to various news outlets.

Community Service

Community service (currently weekly food donations to our local food pantry), allows us to tangibly connect with and help our neighbors. It also fosters important bridge building with others who may not share our political goals.

Connecting with Other Opportunities for Involvement

We are eager to coordinate with and support the work of other organizations whose goals dovetail with our own. Some of these organizations are local to Hillsborough, Durham and Chapel Hill, and some are statewide and national. Our members are also involved in creating their own unique ways of resisting the infractions of this administration.
